65-year old Grenache vines add some big-time oomph to this potent red wine from the southern Rhône. Add to that a dose of Syrah and a splash of Mourvèdre aged in barrels and you've got a dark, meaty red that ushers in all the goodness you could ask for in a delicious Gigondas. Pierre Varenne inherited his 4 hectares of Gigondas from his parents in 1974. He later acquired vineyards in Sablet as well as a small plot in Vacqueyras all of which are now part of his estate at Domaine du Grand Bourjassot. By 2005, Pierre's daughter Cécile, an educated enologist, began making the wine full time. I could go on and on about the dark berry aromas and the tasty flavors of ripe blackberry and black currant in this juicy bottle. But let me just say that everything good about Gigondas is stuffed into this wine! And to make things even better, a Gigondas at this price is almost unheard of. At $22, don't pass up a rare opportunity to experience Gigondas at the highest level. You deserve it, right?
