Most have heard the saying "there must be something in the water." Well let me tell ya', in Fleurie, there must be something in the granite. These ancient, pink granite soils impart amazing traits and flavors to old vines of Gamay Noir grapes. The cru village of Fleurie is known for producing softer, more elegant wines than the firmer, more concentrated styles produced in Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon. Here the Gamay grape takes on a very floral and aromatic personality inherent to the character of Fleurie. In the glass, Les Vieux Granits starts out with sweet aromas of ripe raspberries and from there leads into darker flavors of black currant. Spicy components and more complexity works into the act as the wine opens up. Les Vieux Granits is hand-picked from vines older than 75 years and it spends 8 months in concrete vats. The lack of oak influence is to ensure that the purity of ripe fruit in this wine is maintained from top to bottom. This is Cru Beaujolais - unmasked and unadulterated paying tribute to one of the most traditional growing regions in all of France. Do not forget, this is Burgundy, where in its southern reaches, artisan winemakers are crafting world class wines at really affordable prices.
